A short history

Curitiba was founded as a small Portuguese town in 1693 on the high plateau of Parana. It became a state capital in 1853, and waves of Polish, Ukrainian, German and Italian immigrants arrived in the following decades. From the 1970s the city earned global attention for planning ideas such as its BRT bus network and pedestrian streets. Many of its parks were created on old quarries and flood plains.
