Colorado Springs sits at the foot of Pikes Peak, about 110 km south of Denver, and is one of the easiest bases in the state for mountain scenery without mountain driving. The red sandstone fins of Garden of the Gods, the cog railway to a 4,300 m summit and the quirky spa town of Manitou Springs are all within a short drive. It suits families, hikers and anyone who wants big outdoor views with city comforts. It is also home to the US Air Force Academy and the national Olympic training center.

At a glance

4/5
Safety

There is no US government advisory for domestic travel, so this follows the UK FCDO USA advice, which says violent crime rarely affects tourists; normal city precautions apply, and altitude, sudden storms and summer lightning on high trails are the bigger risks for visitors.

2/5
Walkability

Downtown and Old Colorado City are walkable, but the main sights are spread out and need a car.

2/5
Public transport

Mountain Metro buses cover the city but run infrequently and barely reach the big outdoor sights.

A short history

Ute, Cheyenne and Arapaho peoples used the springs and valleys here long before Europeans arrived. General William Jackson Palmer founded Colorado Springs in 1871 as a planned resort town, and it became a health retreat for people seeking dry mountain air. The 1890s Cripple Creek gold rush made it wealthy, and the Broadmoor hotel opened in 1918. Military bases, including the Air Force Academy from the 1950s, shaped its modern growth.
