Christchurch is the biggest city on New Zealand's South Island, flat, green and easy to explore on foot, by tram or by bike. It was rebuilt after the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, so you see modern architecture, street art and creative spaces beside surviving heritage buildings. It suits families, nature lovers and anyone starting a South Island road trip, with the Port Hills, Banks Peninsula and the Southern Alps all within reach.

TippingTipping is not expected; round up or add a little for great service if you wish.
PaymentsCards and contactless are accepted almost everywhere; carry little cash.
EtiquetteCasual dress is normal. Greet people politely, queue, and follow strict biosecurity rules when you arrive.
  • Never leave bags or valuables visible in a parked car, as thefts from vehicles are a known issue.
  • Weather can swing from sun to cold wind quickly, so carry a layer.
  • In an earthquake: drop, cover and hold, and move to high ground if there is a long or strong shake near the coast.
  • Many shops close early on weekdays outside the centre, so check hours.
  • Book rental cars and campervans early for summer.

A short history

The area was home to Ngai Tahu, who knew it as Otautahi. The Canterbury Association founded the English settlement in 1850 and the city grew as a planned Anglican town around its cathedral square and the Avon River. Earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 destroyed much of the centre and killed 185 people in the February 2011 quake. The long rebuild has produced a new central city with parks, galleries, temporary and permanent landmarks.
