A short history

Charlotte was settled in the mid-1700s and named after Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, hence the Queen City nickname. America's first gold rush began nearby after gold was found in 1799, and a branch of the US Mint opened here in 1837. Textiles and railroads drove growth after the Civil War. From the 1980s the city became a major banking centre, and stock car racing turned the region into the heart of NASCAR.
