A short history

Ferdinand Magellan reached Cebu in 1521 and was killed on nearby Mactan Island by chief Lapulapu. Spain founded its first settlement here in 1565. The city became a major port and trade centre. The Sinulog festival honours the Santo Nino, which Magellan gave to the local queen. Today Cebu is a major commercial and tourism hub.
