A short history
Volcanic eruptions millions of years ago covered the region in soft ash, which wind and water carved into cones, pillars and valleys. Early Christians from the 4th century cut churches and monasteries into the rock and decorated them with frescoes. Whole underground cities, many levels deep, sheltered people during raids. Göreme National Park and the rock sites of Cappadocia were listed by UNESCO in 1985. Tourism and balloon flights grew from the 1990s.
