A short history

The Yidinji and Gimuy Walubara peoples are the traditional owners of the Cairns area. The town was founded in 1876 as a port for the goldfields inland. Sugar cane and the railway to the Atherton Tablelands helped it grow. From the 1980s the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree rainforest made it a major tourist hub. The international airport opened in 1984.
