A short history
Buffalo grew up at the western end of the Erie Canal, which opened in 1825 and made it a giant grain and shipping hub. Cheap hydroelectric power from Niagara made it an early electric city, and wealth poured into grand buildings and a park system designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. President William McKinley was shot at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition here, and Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in at a Buffalo house. After decades of industrial decline, its waterfront and historic buildings are being restored.
