Families come for Silver Dollar City, lake cruises and attractions, while older travelers often come for the shows. Table Rock Lake and Lake Taneycomo add boating, fishing and scenic drives. It is an easy, wholesome and fairly affordable holiday by US standards.

4/5
Safety

Based on UK FCDO travel advice for the USA (there is no US advisory for domestic travel): violent crime rarely affects tourists, so normal city precautions apply; Branson is a calm family resort where the main risks are traffic on Highway 76 and lake safety.

2/5
Walkability

Attractions are spread along busy highways, so walking is limited to Branson Landing and the old downtown.

1/5
Public transport

There is no useful public transport for visitors; plan on a car.

  • Silver Dollar City has seasonal festivals and extended hours at times.
  • Traffic on 76 Country Boulevard can be heavy.
  • Summer storms can interrupt outdoor attractions.

A short history

The Ozarks around Branson were settled by farmers in the 1800s, and a 1907 novel, The Shepherd of the Hills, first drew tourists to the area. Table Rock Dam created Table Rock Lake in the late 1950s, and Silver Dollar City opened in 1960. Family music shows began in the 1960s, and by the 1990s dozens of theaters lined the main road.
