A short history

Bodrum was the ancient city of Halicarnassus, birthplace of the historian Herodotus. Its tomb of King Mausolus, built in the 4th century BC, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and gave us the word mausoleum. In the 15th century the Knights of St. John built a castle here, partly using stones from the ruined tomb. For centuries afterward it was a small sponge diving town, before tourism transformed it from the 1960s.
