  • Summers are hot and humid; carry water.
  • Crab season is typically late spring through fall, and many restaurants serve steamed crabs by the dozen.

A short history

Baltimore was founded in 1729 and grew into a major port and shipbuilding centre. In 1814 the defence of Fort McHenry against the British inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star-Spangled Banner. The B&O, the first US commercial railroad, began here in 1827. After decline in the twentieth century, the Inner Harbor was redeveloped from the 1970s into a waterfront of museums and shops.
