A short history

The site on the Colorado River was chosen as capital of the Republic of Texas in 1839 and named after Stephen F. Austin. Texas joined the United States in 1845, and Austin stayed the state capital. The University of Texas opened in 1883, and the granite capitol was completed in 1888. A live music scene grew from the 1970s, and a tech boom since the 1990s has made it one of the fastest growing big cities in the US.
