A short history

Maori settled the isthmus centuries ago and named it Tamaki Makaurau, prized for its fertile volcanic soils. Many cones were terraced as fortified pa sites. The British made Auckland the colonial capital in 1841, before Wellington took over in 1865. It is now home to the world's largest Polynesian population.
