A short history

The Arrernte people have lived in the Alice Springs area for tens of thousands of years, and the town is known to them as Mparntwe. European settlers set up the Overland Telegraph Station here in 1872. The town grew with the Ghan railway and later with tourism and Indigenous service organisations. Today it is the main hub of the Red Centre.
