A short history

The Kaurna people are the traditional owners of the Adelaide Plains. Adelaide was founded in 1836 as the capital of a planned free colony with no convicts. Colonel William Light laid out the city with a grid surrounded by parkland. German migrants settled the nearby hills and valleys and started the wine industry. Today it is known for its festivals and food.
